German novelist. Name variations: Amely Bölte or Boelte; Amely Charlotte Elise Marianne Bölte. Born Oct 6, 1811, in Rhena, Mecklenburg, Germany; died Nov 15, 1891, in Wiesbaden; niece of Fanny Tarnow.
Worked as governess in Germany and then as translator in England, where she wrote novels in the vein of Charlotte Brontë; returned to Germany and wrote biographies and historical novels; worked on behalf of unemployed women.
