Benizelos, Philothey (fl. 1650)

Greek abbess. Flourished 1650 in Greece; never married; no children.

Very few facts are known about the life of Philothey Benizelos. An abbess who founded a convent school around 1650 which became a popular refuge for local women, she seems to have come into conflict with local authorities over her management of the abbey's lands, and was forced to take arms against the rebellious peasants who were tenants on her properties. Eventually sentenced to prison, Benizelos was apparently murdered soon afterwards.
