moral statistics Numerical data which are generally held to be indicative of social pathology. These would include, for example, statistics on suicide, divorce, mental health, illegitimacy, and abortion. In certain nineteenth-century European societies (most notably France and Britain), such data were widely cited in debates about social reform—although they were usually deployed in very unsociological (indeed unsophisticated) ways.
