counter-culture Where subcultures specifically stand in direct opposition to the dominant culture of the society in which they are located, rejecting its most important values and norms and endorsing their opposites, they are sometimes termed ‘contra-cultures’ or ‘counter-cultures’. The term was popularly applied to the student and hippy cultures identified with the youth conflicts around 1968, but it can have a wider usage.
