Mariano Santo di Barletta

1488-1550

Italian surgeon who developed a method for the surgical removal of bladder stones. Earlier, in the first century a.d., Celsus described a risky method of inserting a finger into the rectum, causing the stones to bulge into the body cavity. Mariano developed a surgical procedure where the stone could be removed by an instrument, avoiding the complications of Celsus's procedure.
