Czech-American husband and wife physicians who won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1947 for their discoveries concerning the enzymes involved in the metabolism of glycogen and glucose. Carl and Gerty Cori worked in close collaboration for 35 years as pioneers in the development of "dynamic biochemistry." Their work also established the effects of such hormones as insulin and epinephrine on carbohydrate metabolism.
