Carl Frederick Schmidt

1893-1988

American physiologist who carried out experiments with Alfred Newton Richards in the 1920s concerning the secretion of urine. Richards and Schmidt published a description of the glomerular circulation in the frog's kidney as well as observations of the effect of adrenalin and other substances on the circulation. They collected and analyzed the fluid from a single glomerulus, confirming the theories of Karl Ludwig and Arthur Cushny. In 1918 Schmidt and Ko Kuei Chen published an influential treatise on ephedrine and related substances that summarized the current literature and provided an extensive bibliography.
