Taxodium (swamp cypress; family Taxodiaceae) A genus of conifers with alternate, strap-shaped deciduous leaves, and remarkable ‘knees’ on its roots in wet soil, which come to the surface like the pneumatophores of mangroves, and evidently help to provide oxygen for the root system. There are 2 species, T. distichum, confined to the USA, and T. mucronatum in Mexico.
