Steatornithidae (oilbird; class Aves, order Caprimulgiformes) A monospecific family (Steatornis caripensis), which is a chestnut-coloured bird, marked with white spots. It has long, pointed wings, a long tail, short legs, a short, hooked bill, a wide gape, and rictal bristles. It is nocturnal and inhabits caves, using echo-location to fly about in the dark. It feeds on fruit, and nests colonially on cave ledges. It is found in S. America.
