Hynobiidae (hynobiids, Asian land salamvers; class Amphibia, order Urodela) A family of amphibians in which metamorphosis is complete, adults lacking larval teeth or gills. They grow to about 8–25 cm long. Some species are found in mountain streams at altitudes up to 400 m. The lungs are sometimes lost, presumably to reduce buoyancy in fast-flowing water. There are five genera, with about 30 species, all of which are Asiatic.
