hyostyly A type of jaw suspension in which the upper jaw is attached to the cranium anteriorly only by means of ligaments and posteriorly by the hyomandibular. Hyostyly, found e.g. in sharks and rays, allows multiple jaw positioning. Compare AMPHISTYLY.
