catadromous Applied to the migratory behaviour of fish that spend most of their lives in fresh water but travel to the sea in order to breed there (e.g. Anguilla anguilla (common eel) which breeds in the Sargasso Sea). Compare anadromous; and potamodromous. See also amphidromous; and diadromous.
