CAT-5

CAT-5 Short for category-5. One of the standards for twisted pair cabling defined in EIA/TIA 568 for building wiring. CAT-5 and CAT-5e (CAT-5 enhanced) are frequently used for local area building wiring at up to 100 MHz. Later versions, where the transmission parameters for cable and connectors are more tightly defined, support up to 1000 MHz and are now available. At the lower speeds UTP cable is normally used, while STP cable is used for the higher speeds at which EMC may be more of a problem.
