carnauba wax A major source of wax for polishes, obtained from the leaf surfaces of Copernicia cerifera (wax palm) of the dry north-eastern shoulder of Brazil, where it is exceedingly abundant in open savannah forest. A tribe of Indians, the Carnaubeira, was almost completely dependent on its products. See also COPERNICIA.
