ROBERT OF SOLETO, BL.

Celestine monk (also known as Robert of Sala, Salle), b. Sala, Italy 1273; d. Morrone, July 18, 1341. He received the monastic habit from Peter of Morrone in 1289. When the latter was elected Pope celestine v in 1294, Robert declined the cardinal's hat, for which petrarch commended him in his De vita solitaria (2.3, ch.18). As prior and general procurator of the celestines, Robert was the founder of monasteries and hospices for the sick and orphans. Contemporaries revered him for his mortification and devotion to the Sacred Passion.
