LÉVY (Levy-Alvares), ABRAHAM EUGÈNE
LÉVY (Levy-Alvares ), ABRAHAM EUGÈNE (1826–1899), French army officer. Lévy joined the French army in 1845 and was distinguished for his bravery during the Crimean War of 1854–56. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1880, one of the first Jews so appointed. Lévy refused to convert to Christianity to further his career.
