Karl August Varnhagen von Ense (kärl ou´gŏŏst färn´hägən fən ĕn´zə), 1785–1858, German poet, historian, and journalist. He collaborated with Chamisso and other writers and wrote Biographische Denkmaler [biographical monuments] (5 vol., 1824–30). The Berlin salon of his wife, Rahel Antoine Friederike Levin Varnhagen von Ense (1771–1833), was frequented by leading romantics, among them Heine, Gutzkow, and Laube.
