Shandong
Shandong (Shantung) Province in e China. Jinan is the capital. The e part of the province is a peninsula between the Po Hai and the Huang Hai; the w is part of the Huang He delta. Much of the land has been reclaimed. Oil, coal, iron ore, salt, and gold are all extracted. Fishing and silk are important industries. It is the birthplace of Confucius. Area: 153,600sq km (59,304sq mi). Pop. (2000) 90,790,000.
