Edwin Guest, 1800–1880, English archaeologist and philologist. A founder of the Philological Society (1842), Guest wrote articles on English philology and on archaeology, especially on the remains of Roman Britain. His writings are still valuable for the extensive material cited. His only book was A History of English Rhythms (1838; ed. by W. W. Skeat, 1882); his papers were republished as Origines Celticae (ed. by William Stubbs and C. Deedes, 1883).
