West, Dame Rebecca

West, Dame Rebecca (1892–1983) English novelist and critic, b. Cicily Isabel Fairfield. She is best known for her first novel, The Return of the Soldier (1918) – the story of a shell-shock victim. Her political works include The Meaning of Treason (1949) and A Train of Powder (1955). She also wrote perceptive psychological novels such as The Thinking Reed (1936) and Birds Fall Down (1966). She published her last book, 1900, a year before her death at age 91.
