Ruiz de Montoya, Antonio (1583–1653)

Antonio Ruiz de Montoya (b. 11 November 1583; d. 11 April 1653), Jesuit missionary who worked among the Guaraní Indians. Ruiz was born in Lima, Peru, and entered the Society of Jesus in 1606. He completed his novitiate in Córdoba, Argentina, two years later. After ordination he was sent to the Guaraní missions along the Paraná River and was superior there from 1623 to 1637. He was deeply involved in opposing the Paulista raids on the missions. His writings include the Conquista espiritual (1639), which describes the natural features and peoples of the mission area; the Tesoro de la lengua guaraní (1639), a catechism and grammar of the Guaraní language; and Arte y vocabulario de la lengua guaraní (1640). Ruiz died in Lima and was buried in the reduction of Loreto.
