HYPERCORRECTION
HYPERCORRECTION. Over-correction resulting in usages that may be regarded as amusing, deplorable, and/or tokens of the insecurity that prompted it. In NEW YORK City, highly stigmatized pronunciations (represented in print as, for example, Toity-Toid Street for Thirty-Third Street) are popularly associated with Brooklyn (although they are widespread throughout the working class). Speakers who want to dissociate themselves from this accent often ‘correct’ all forms which contain oi, so that toilet becomes ‘terlet’ and boil becomes ‘berl’. Such hypercorrections have often themselves become STEREOTYPES and SHIBBOLETHS.
