Gil, Jerónimo Antonio (1732–1798)

Jerónimo Antonio Gil (b. 1732; d. 18 April 1798), engraver. Trained in painting and engraving at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, Gil arrived in New Spain in 1778 to take charge of the Royal Mint in Mexico City and was entrusted with establishing a school of engraving there. His efforts in artistic education eventually resulted in the Academia de San Carlos, formally established in 1785, of which he was director until his death. His works include medals, coins, and illustrations. Especially noteworthy is the commemorative medal of Manuel Tolsá's equestrian statue of Charles IV.
