An occasional term in LINGUISTICS and LANGUAGE TEACHING for RECEIVED PRONUNCIATION as the accent that represents BrE, used especially to contrast with GENERAL AMERICAN: ‘The British English form [in this dictionary] is that which has been called Received Pronunciation or General British’ (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English, 1974).
