Amaral, Antônio José Azevedo do (1881–1942)

Antônio José Azevedo do Amaral (b. 1881, d. 1942), Brazilian journalist. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Amaral earned a degree from Rio's Faculdade de Medicina in 1903, but he soon established himself in Carioca journalism, writing for Jornal do Commércio, a Notícia, and Correio da Manhã. Expelled from England for his pro-German reporting in 1916, he returned to Brazil. After becoming the editor of the Correio da Manhã, he went on to edit O País and founded Rio-Jornal (1918) with João do Rio and O Dia (1921) with Virgílio de Melo Franco. A translator of the corporativist Mihail Manoilesco, Amaral is most noted for the rightist nationalism of his own essays, which made him an influential spokesman for the nationalist authoritarianism and statist industrialization of the Estado Nôvo era.
