Adem Chahín, Julián (1924–)

Julián Adem Chahín (b. 8 January 1924), leading Mexican geophysicist and specialist in atmospheric sciences. Adem obtained an engineering degree from the National University (1948) and his doctorate in applied mathematics from Brown University (1953), after which he completed advanced studies in atmospheric sciences in Stockholm (1955–1956). After serving as a full-time researcher at the Geophysics Institute, he became its director and then founded the Center for Atmospheric Sciences. Invited to be a member of the prestigious National College, Adem received Mexico's National Prize in Sciences (1976). Adem founded the journal Atmósfera in 1988 and served as editor until 2002. Brother of mathematician José Adem Chahín, he is known for his discovery of a long-range predictive thermodynamic model.
