Somerset House
Somerset House in London, on the site of the house built by the Duke of Somerset, Lord Protector for Edward VI; the current neoclassical building dates from the late 18th century, and was built by the Scottish architect Sir William Chambers (1723–96); since 1990 it has housed the Courtauld Institute Galleries. Between its establishment in 1837 and 1990, the national registry for births, marriages, and deaths was at Somerset House.
