postmaster The activity at a site that undertakes the management of the electronic-mail service for that site. The management activity includes dealing with the maintenance of e-mail addresses and with errors or failures in the mail services, as well as replying to queries. Some of this work is carried out by computer programs while other aspects demand human intervention. On a large site with many e-mail users, the role of postmaster will usually be a joint activity by several people to ensure continuity of service.
