Tettenhall, battle of
Tettenhall, battle of, 910. With the death of Alfred the Great in 899, his son Edward succeeded to the Wessex crown. Together with his sister Æthelfleda, ‘the lady of the Mercians’, Edward began to forge a strong English kingdom. The Danes invaded in 910 and the king marched his army to Staffordshire to intercept them. On 5 August the Saxons fought a pitched battle with the Northumbrian Danes. Edward won a convincing victory and extended his kingdom as far north as the Humber.
