Tempsford, battle of, c.918. Edward the Elder and his sister Æthelfleda, lady of the Mercians, launched a sustained counter-attack upon Danish-held territory. In c.918 he stormed a large Danish camp at Tempsford, east of Bedford, killing the leader Guthrum II. Danish resistance in East Anglia crumbled.
