Lockhart, Sir George
Lockhart, Sir George (c.1630–89). Lawyer. Lockhart's father was a Scottish judge and his elder brother William a soldier and diplomat. George Lockhart served as advocate to Cromwell when he was protector, was pardoned at the Restoration, and became one of the leading advocates at the Scottish bar, defending Argyll at his trial for treason in 1681. In 1685 James VII appointed him lord president of the Court of Session. He was shot in March 1689 by an aggrieved private suitor. His elder son George, an active Jacobite, was killed in a duel in 1731: his younger son Philip was shot after the Jacobite surrender at Preston in 1715.
