Hatfield, Council of

Hatfield, Council of, 680. The council arose out of concern over the Monothelite heresy, significant in the East, and finally condemned at the Council of Constantinople, 680–1. To test the soundness of the West, synods were held by metropolitans in their provinces and the pope in Rome. Any possible fears that the Cilician Theodore, archbishop of Canterbury, might have introduced Greek customs to England would have been unfounded. At Hatfield, the bishops and teachers summoned by him united in their declaration of the orthodox catholic faith.
