greyhound racing as an organized sport developed in the USA, though greyhounds had been bred and raced for centuries. The sport owed its appeal to the oval course, which makes for tactical running, and to betting. In England the first track was opened at Belle Vue (Manchester) in 1926. The National Greyhound Racing Club was established in 1928. The major national event is the Greyhound Derby at the White City, London, which is usually televised.
