Rebellions of 1837
Rebellions of 1837 Risings in favour of self-rule in Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Québec). William Lyon Mackenzie led the rising in Upper Canada, which soon fizzled out. The revolt in Lower Canada, led by Louis Papineau, was more serious, and was brutally suppressed. The outbreaks led to the Durham Report and the union of Upper and Lower Canada in 1841.
