Languedoc-Roussillon Region of s France, extending from the Rhône valley to the foothills of the Pyrenees; the capital is Montpellier. Languedoc was part of the Carolingian Empire, before passing to the French monarchy in 1271. It is one of the world's major wine-producing regions. Area: 27,736sq km (10,706sq mi). Pop. (1999) 2,295,648.
