Glamorganshire

Glamorganshire (Morganwg) Former county in s Wales, divided into West, Mid, and South Glamorgan. The Romans invaded in the 1st century ad and constructed roads to link their fortified settlements. Christianity spread in the 6th century. In Norman times Glamorgan became a border territory owing allegiance to the English crown. In the 15th century it suffered during the rebellion of Glyn Dw̧r. It was created as a county in 1536, and underwent rapid industrialization owing to its coal industry. Area: 2119sq km (818sq mi).
