CITY UNIVERSITY

Distance Learning Option
Bellevue, Washington

City University was founded in 1973 on the philosophy that everyone should have access to high-quality higher education. The University upholds this philosophy by offering programs that are well designed, cost effective, and conveniently offered. The University's progressive approach to education has fueled its growth from a single classroom in downtown Seattle to one of the largest private universities in the state of Washington. It is a private, nonprofit institution and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

City University's programs cover a variety of academic fields, ranging from business management and technology to psychology and communications. The majority of faculty members actively work in the fields they teach. The combination of innovative program design and outstanding instruction makes City University an exceptional institution of higher learning.

Distance Learning Program

In keeping with its mission of providing convenient, accessible education, City University offers most of its degree programs through distance learning (DL), utilizing the World Wide Web. City University serves approximately 4,500 students annually through DL.

Delivery Media

City University delivers distance learning course work utilizing the Blackboard Course Management System. Delivered through asynchronous interaction on the World Wide Web, City University distance learning courses are designed for optimum learning anywhere, anytime. Highly qualified faculty members, who are working in the fields they teach, provide distance learning students with real-world application of course material. In addition, structured discussions provide students the opportunity to exchange in dialogue with peers without the need of traveling to a classroom.

Programs of Study

City University's undergraduate programs prepare students to compete in today's marketplace. Students may complete a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. Within these degrees, students may pursue one of several areas of study, including accounting, business administration, communications, computer systems, marketing, or psychology. Undergraduate courses are 5 credits each; 180 credits are required for completion of a B.S. degree, and students typically transfer the first two years of study.

City University's graduate business program prepares management professionals for leadership roles at local, national, and international levels. Students may pursue a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), a Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.), or a Master of Science in either project management or computer systems. Most graduate courses are worth 3 credits; total required credits range from 45 to 60. Students may also pursue a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in literacy. Total required credits for this program is 45.

Special Programs

City University has an "open-door" admissions policy for most programs. Students may begin course work at the start of any quarter once accepted to their program of study.

All of City University's programs are geared for adult students. From its student body to its faculty and staff, City University is a community of professionals. All who are associated with the University understand the needs of adult learners who are seeking high-quality education that applies to their individual lifestyle.

Student Services

Students may register online or by phone. Academic advising and assistance is available from a distance learning adviser by phone, fax, or e-mail. Students have full access to the library via the Internet and a toll-free phone number, and a mailing service for circulation of books and articles is available as well.

Credit Options

Students may transfer up to 90 approved lower-division and 45 approved upper-division credits from approved institutions for baccalaureate programs. The Prior Learning Experience Program lets students earn credits through documented experimental learning. Students may receive credit for the CLEP or other standardized tests. Graduate students may transfer up to 12 credits from approved programs.

Faculty

There are more than 250 faculty members included in the distance learning program. Faculty members have, at minimum, a master's degree and professional experience in the fields they teach.

Admission

Undergraduate programs are generally open to applicants over 18 years of age who hold a high school diploma or GED. Admission to graduate programs requires that students hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited or otherwise recognized institution. Additional requirements apply to education programs. International students whose first language is not English are required to submit a TOEFL score of at least 540 for admission to undergraduate programs and 565 for graduate programs.

Tuition and Fees

For 2005–06, tuition was $233 per undergraduate credit hour and $398 per graduate credit hour. The tuition rate is the same for both in-class and distance learning study. Other fees may apply, depending on the specific course of study. Additional fees apply for certificate completion, graduation application, course registration, and various tests or examinations that the student may request. All initial applicants for certificate or degree programs pay a nonrefundable application fee of $80. Tuition and fees are subject to annual review on July 1.

Textbooks and other instructional materials are additional. While the number of required texts and other course materials vary with each course, textbooks typically cost between $100 and $150 each.
