Schädel, Gottfried Johann
Schädel, Gottfried Johann (c.1680–1752). German Baroque architect. He accompanied Schlüter when the latter was called to St Petersburg in 1713, and appears to have been responsible for the design of Prince Alexander Menshikov's (1673–1729) Palace at Oranienbaum (completed c.1725), the first great palace in Russia in the Western-European style, situated overlooking the Gulf of Finland, west of the city. He later worked in Kiev, Ukraine, where he remodelled Kiev Academy (1732–40), designed the belfries of the Cathedral of the Dormition (1731–45) and the Sophia Cathedral (1744–8), and carried out other works, often merging Baroque and Byzantine elements.
