Sidelights

Drawing on her enduring love of books and experience in the classroom as an elementary school teacher, Lola M. Schaefer began writing books and other teaching materials for beginning readers in the mid-1990s. As she once told SATA: "For years I have had the great pleasure of sharing the best of children's literature with students in my classroom. I have seen their joy of reading grow with each wonderful book. My love of writing stems from a desire to contribute to the vast wealth of excellent literature." And contribute she has, penning over numerous titles for educational publishers such as Scholastic, Rigby, Capstone Press, and the Heinemann Library. In addition to contributing to series about animals, careers, holidays, machines, nutrition, and notable individuals, Schaefer has written stand-alone picture book texts, such as the award-winning Arrowhawk, featuring paintings by Polish artist and illustrator Gabi Swiatkowska. Narrated from the animal's point of view, Arrowhawk is based on a true story about a red-tailed hawk that was shot by an arrow, then nursed back to health and released into the wild. The work was praised by School Library Journal reviewer Susan Oliver as "a moving story" as well as an "important and dramatic tale that should be widely shared with children." A Kirkus Reviews writer echoed that view, writing that Arrowhawk will give young children "an appreciation for the beauty of birds of prey and their role in nature."

Among Schaefer's works are volumes for a number of multi-volume series about animals, among them the "Wild World of Animals," the "Animal Kingdom," "Ocean Life," "Honey Bees," "Ooey-Gooey Animals," "Musty-Crusty Animals," and "My Big Backyard" books. Because these are all books for very young readers, the texts are short and photo-driven. In contrast, her stand-alone picture books, which include This Is the Sunflower, Pick, Pull, Snap!: Where Once a Flower Bloomed, and Arrowhawk, feature a more sophisticated text. With illustrations by David Crews, This Is the Sunflower is constructed as a rebus and recounts the life cycle of a summer flower familiar to many children. School Library Journal critic Carolyn Jenks dubbed it a "simple, elegant book," while Gillian Engberg predicted in Booklist that This Is the Sunflower will be "perfect for story hours." Todd Morning, writing in the same periodical, praised the companion volume, This Is the Rain, for both its "quiet, rhymed text" and attractive illustrations by Jane Wattenberg, and a Publishers Weekly contributor wrote that Schaefer's "simple" text "conjures up vivid images."

Pick, Pull, Snap! describes how different plants develop the seeds that will allow them to survive as a species. Paired with "photo-realistic" illustrations by Lindsay Barrett George, Schaefer's text draws readers into a variety of agricultural environments—a garden, orchard, farm field, and berry patch—and uses "a creative approach" to explain maturation, pollination, and seed production. The author's "simple, accurate explanations … make this a satisfying treat," wrote a Kirkus Reviews contributor of the work, the critic dubbing Pick, Pull, Snap! "perfect for budding green thumbs." Describing Schaefer's descriptions as "solid," Luann Toth predicted in her School Library Journal review of the book that readers "will want to rush out … and get their hands dirty." Another book that focuses on the cycles of nature, An Island Grows focuses on the development of a volcanic island, from the movement of the tectonic plates that initiates the volcanic eruption to the processes by which soil forms, seeds, birds, and insects arrive to make a home, and humans immigrate to build communities. Schaefer uses "appealing rhyming statements … [that] are perfectly pitched to young readers," noted Horn Book reviewer Danielle J. Ford, while School Library Journal critic Heide Piehler also cited the author's "poetic language."

The natural world is not Schaefer's only focus; people figure prominently in a number of series, including "Families," about the relationships between family members, "Helpers in Our Community," about the importance of common professions, and "Who Works Here?," about a variety of occupations. "First Biographies," "Famous Americans," and "Famous People in Transportation" all deal with individuals of great accomplishment, while books in the "Science about Me" and "What's on Your Plate?" series teach young children to make more informed choices in their personal life. "Understanding Differences" tells of people with special challenges. Commenting on the "Helpers in Our Community" titles We Need Doctors, We Need Nurses, We Need Dentists, and We Need Veterinarians, a Science Books and Films reviewer predicted that children "will enjoy [the] accurate, simplified information" provided. The "Famous People in Transportation" series also caught the attention of critics such as School Library Journal contributor Anne Chapman Callaghan, who praised Schaefer's "easy-to-understand and interesting accounts."

Reflecting on her aspirations, Schaefer once told SATA: "I want to grow as a writer and be able to offer children stories that will tickle their funny bone, awaken a sense of wonder, or simply entertain. There are a lot of stories within all of us. I want to share many of mine with children through the power of written language."
