Gray, Eileen
Gray, Eileen (1879–1976). Irish-born designer. Her International Modernist architectural work included the ‘E-1027’ House, Roquebrune, France (1926–9), the Badovici Apartment, Paris (1930–1), the Tempe à Pailla House, Castellar, France (1932–4), and a cultural centre exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1937 by Le Corbusier in his Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux. She was also a gifted furni-ture-designer, starting with her lacquer work, influenced by Japanese precedents. After the 1914–18 war she became an interior designer, anticipating aspects of De Stijl themes, and designing furniture using chromed steel, aluminium, and mirror-glass.
