Gray, Anne
Gray, Anne, American writer on music of English descent; b. Vienna, Oct. 26, 1941. She was smuggled to London during World War II. In 1947 she was taken to N.Y. and in 1948 she became a naturalized American citizen. She studied music, speech, and drama at Hunter Coll. (B.A., 1963), English and education at San Diego State Univ. (M.A., 1968), and humanities at the Univ. of Calif, at San Diego (Ph.D., 1982). From 1968 to 1971 she was prof. of English at Mesa (Calif.) Coll. She wrote the useful and engaging tomes The Popular Guide to Classical Music (1994; 2nd ed., rev., 1996) and The Popular Guide to Women in Classical Music (2000).
