estípite. Pilaster or square column, often tapered so that it is smaller at the bottom than the top, lavishly enriched with geometrical patterns, low reliefs, intermediate capital-like mouldings, and cartouches derived from pattern-books such as those of Dietterlin and North-European Mannerists. It occurs in Spanish Baroque and Churrigueresque architecture.
