SIDELIGHTS:

Diane Whiteside is the author of romance novels and novellas, the first of which, The Irish Devil, was published in 2004. The book tells the story of Viola, a young woman from a wealthy background who was forced to marry a man of lesser standing. When she is widowed, Viola earns her keep by doing the wash for her neighbors in a mining town in the West. When she learns of Irishman William Donovan, who has set out to make his own fortune, she proposes that she become the man's mistress in a desperate attempt to improve her lot. Maria Hatton, writing in Booklist, dubbed the book "a very interesting story related in prose so steamy that it fogs one's reading glasses." The River Devil tells the story of another young woman struggling on her own, in this case Rosalind, who runs away dressed as a man in order to make her fortune at the poker tables. Again reviewing for Booklist, Hatton declared the book "another entertaining adventure set in the late 1800s." The Southern Devil follows widow Jessamyn Tyler, as she travels to Kansas City to hear the reading of her uncle's will. Hatton found the book to be "another Whiteside winner, filled with raw sex and realistic portrayals." Other Whiteside books delve into other subgenres within the romance arena, such as Bond of Blood, a paranormal vampire story.
