SIDELIGHTS:

Nell Newman founded Newman's Own Organics in 1993 after impressing her father with a Thanksgiving dinner made entirely from organic foods. Nell had previously suggested that the family food company diversify and get into the organic market, but it took the Thanksgiving dinner to sell the idea to her dad.

In 2003 Newman wrote an all-inclusive book, The Newman's Own Organics' Guide to a Good Life, designed for average people who want to maintain a healthy, natural lifestyle. In a review for E, Laura Ruth Zandstra noted that the authors do "a marvelous job of making organics accessible." A writer for E-Publishers Weekly called the book "upbeat and teaming with good news," adding that "the alternatives offered throughout … are viable and real." Although The Newman's Own Organics' Guide to a Good Life is primarily about lifestyle, Newman intended to promote more than just good health. According to the Newman's Own Organics Web site, her goal in writing the book was also "to support the environment through the growth of organic agriculture."
