Born October 5, 1937, in San Francisco, CA; son of Henry and Evelyn Gladys (Towndolly) La-Peña; married Catherine Alice Sell Skinner, August 19, 1966 (divorced April, 1984); children: Kari Renee, Vincent Craig; stepchildren: Ivy, Peggy, Dan, Paul, Nancy. Education: California State University—Chico, B.A., 1965; San Francisco State College (now University), secondary teaching certificate, 1968; California State University—Sacramento, M.A., 1978.

CAREER:

Shasta Junior College, Redding, CA, instructor, 1969-71; California State University—Sacramento, began as instructor, became assistant professor of art, 1971-73, professor of art and ethnic studies and director of Native American studies, beginning 1974. Maidu Dancers and Traditionalists, dancer; Peña Adobe, Vacaville, CA, instructor, 1970; University of Alberta, instructor, 1974. U.S. Department of the Interior, research associate, 1984. Certified silversmith, 1977; painter, photographer, and mixed-media artist; art represented in many solo and group shows, including exhibitions at California State Museum, Natsoulas Gallery, Davis, CA, American Indian Community House in New York, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, and National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution; work collected at Crocker Museum, Heard Museum, Turtle Foundation Center for Living Arts, and Indian Arts and Crafts Board of U.S. Department of the Interior.
