SIDELIGHTS: British writer Nigel Hinton once commented: "My first novel was written while I was still a teacher. I wanted to write something better for the kind of pupils I was teaching than what was generally available. When I received a letter about the book from a young American reader who signed himself 'Your new friend,' I found the urge to go on irresistible. I write for children and young adults because their world still has the dramatic clash between their personalities and social conventions (largely absent in adult Western society)."
