SIDEUGHTS: Lisa Drucker told CA: "Writing is my true calling and has been ever since I was a child. When I don't write, I feel disconnected and unfulfilled at a deep level.

"By nature, Fm an observer. People fascinate me. More than anything else, writing gives me insight into the human condition. Every story—whether of a thousand words or a hundred thousand—is the unfolding of a what-if idea germinated in my imagination.

"I start with a what-if idea—one that I can't stop thinking about … that I have to write. Then I flesh out the characters in sketches. After that I diagram the plot and story line. Finally I start writing, letting what Fve learned about the characters guide me, and referring to my diagram as needed. Most important, I let the story tell itself through me and try not to get in the way.

"I think fiction and humor are enormously helpful in allowing people to examine problems in a not intimidating way, a way that defuses conflict and deflects defensiveness. Truth may be stranger than fiction, but a good story can leave a lasting—and often life-changing—impression on the reader. I hope all my work achieves that goal."
