CARROLL, Benajah Harvey 1843-1914

PERSONAL: Born December 27, 1843, in Carrolton, MS; died November 11, 1914, in Fort Worth, TX; son of Benajah (a farmer and preacher) and Mary Eliza (Mallard) Carroll; married Ellen Virginia Bell, c. 1866. Education: Baylor University, A.B.

CAREER: Ordained minister of Southern Baptist Convention, c. 1866; pastor of Baptist churches in Burleson County and McLennan County, TX, c. 1866-70; pastor of Baptist church in Waco, TX, beginning 1870; Baylor University, Waco, TX, instructor in Bible and theology, 1872-c. 1908, founder of Baylor Theological Seminary, 1905; Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth TX, president, 1908-14. Worked as a schoolteacher in McLennan County. Also active with Texas Baptist Convention. Military service: Texas Rangers, served prior to 1862. Confederate Army, 1862-65.
