SIDELIGHTS: Tim J. Carman told CA: "My primary motivation for writing comes from school leaders, including superintendents, principals, teachers, and friends. My work is influenced by thirty-four years of experience. I became ill in 1998 with a stroke and was forced to retire prematurely. I wrote my first book out of hurt and frustration, and ultimately finished the book out of a profound interest in trying to help educational leaders grapple with the complexities of high academic standards. Then I felt a compelling need to communicate directly with teachers. This launched work on my second book."
