PERSONAL:

Born January 11, 1827, in Liverpool, England; immigrated to the United States, 1842; died of influenza May 12, 1901, in Monterey, CA; son of George and Ann (Quayle) Cannon; adopted son of John Taylor; married Elizabeth Hoagland, 1854; also married Jane Jenne, Eliza Lamercia Tenny, Martha Telle, and Caroline Young Croxall; children: (second marriage) Franklin Jenne. Religion: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon).

CAREER:

Missionary, author, and journalist. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, missionary in California, 1849, and Hawaii, 1850, editor of Western Standard, mid-1850s, head of California Mission, 1856-58, leader of Eastern States Mission, 1858-60, ordained member of Council of Apostles, 1859, leader of European Mission based in England, 1860-c. 1864, personal secretary to Brigham Young, 1964-67, founder of Juvenile Instructor, 1866, general superintendent of Sunday School Union, 1867-1901, special counselor to First Presidency, 1873-1901. U.S. Congress, territorial delegate from Utah, 1872-c. 1881. Editor of Millennial Star (Liverpool, England), c. 1860, and Deseret News, beginning 1867; Utah Central Railroad, organizing member; Union Pacific Railroad, member of board of directors; also participated in business ventures in banking and the sugar industry.
